BMW Bikes Washed Ashore

THEY came in their hundreds, scavenging by torchlight through the pitch dark of a January night - men, women and children joining the hunt for treasures given up by the sea.

Never in living memory had there been such riches washed up on the pebble beach at Branscombe in Devon, courtesy of last week’s storms which forced the mighty 62,000-tonne MSC Napoli to disgorge her cargo.

The rumours of BMW motorbikes still in their boxes proved to be true. Also there for the taking were oil paintings signed by Russian artist Aidir Chusainov, Nike trainers and perfume, car steering wheels, bottles of fine French wine, beauty cream, Bibles, dog food and camcorders.

Dakar 2007; Coma Crashes Out

Marc Coma has crashed out of the 2007 Dakar Rally, after getting lost on this morning’s stage near Tambacounda in Senegal.

Coma looked set for another victory in the famous off-road rally, but a fall today left him unable to ride and he was helicoptered to Dakar for further medical treatment. His team mate Esteve Pujol used parts from Coma’s bike to keep his own bike going, as the Dakar reaches its final stages.

The favourite for the win now is Frenchman Cyril Despres, who was lying some 50 minutes behind Coma, but boosted his hopes of victory with a stage win today, as well as seeing Coma go out of the event.

UK: Motorists Petition Against Road Pricing

Nearly a quarter million UK motorists signed an official petition opposing road pricing.

Nearly a quarter million UK motorists have signed an official petition opposing the proposed use of GPS tracking systems to charge drivers a tax for every mile they drive. The petition currently has 230,044 signatures — ten times more than its nearest competitor.

“The idea of tracking every vehicle at all times is sinister and wrong,” the petition states. “Road pricing is already here with the high level of taxation on fuel. The more you travel — the more tax you pay. Please Mr Blair — forget about road pricing and concentrate on improving our roads to reduce congestion.”
