The motto of the Reynolds-Alberta Museum is “Celebrating the spirit of the machine,” and it’s doing just that this summer with an exhibition of over 150 motorcycles.

The show, titled Life and Times of the Motorcycle, looks at motorcycling from 1900 to the present and explores such topics as customizing, racing, off-roading and advertising. There are also audio-visual presentations, a lecture series and the restoration of a vintage bike.

As well, a special event on Aug. 20-21 called Motorcycles and the People Who Love Them will include a performance by the Canadian Chaos motorcycle stunt stem. And on Sept. 18 there will be an auction of motorcycles and memorabilia.

The provincially owned museum, which opened in 1992, has more than 8,000 artifacts in its collection (not all on display), many of them donated by local businessman Stanley Reynolds. They include vehicles, aircraft, tractors and industrial machines.

The museum is located two kilometres west of Wetaskiwin on Highway 13. It’s open seven days a week during the summer. Adult admission is $9 (seniors $7, children $5). Wetaskiwin is 70 kilometres south of Edmonton.

The 25-year-old American Motorcyclists Association (AMA) Motocross Champion won his fifth straight AMA 250 Motocross Championship race Sunday at Red Bud Track ‘N Trail to remain unbeaten this year. The victory was the 54th of his career in the series and doubles the 27 wins earned by Motorcycle Hall of Famer Bob Hannah, who stands second on the all-time wins list.

“I wasn’t even aware of doubling Hannah’s win record,” Carmichael said. “It’s an awesome feeling to be honest. The wins just keep coming. I can’t say enough about my team and the people around me who’ve helped me get to this point.”
Carmichael’s victory also marked the first Red Bud 250 National win for Suzuki in 27 years. Kevin Windham finished second on a Honda. It was his best result of the year. Red Bud fans went nuts when Windham got by Stewart in the second moto.
“It gave me chills to here the fans cheering me on,” Windham said. “I’ve always liked racing here and the fans are a big part of that.”

Kawasaki’s James Stewart was third. He had a run in with Windham in the second moto that resulted in Windham going down. When Windham chased him down it appeared to many that Stewart allowed Windham past in a laudable show of sportsmanship.
Chad Reed had a bad day. The chain came off his bike in the first moto and he finished fourth in the second for 10th overall, his worst result of the year. It also allowed Windham to move within two points of Reed in the standings.
Grant Langston, of South Africa, won the 125 class with a 1-2. It was Langston’s third win of the year and moved him from fifth to third in the standings. Langston is now tied for 12th on the all-time AMA 125 Motocross wins list.

Ryan Mills and Andrew Short took second and third overall respectively. It marked the first career podium finish for both riders and for Mills his second moto win was also a first.
