Triumph Motorcycles (America) Ltd. Sets New Sales Record

Monday, January 24th, 2005

NEWNAN, Georgia - January 18, 2005 ~ Triumph Motorcycles (America) Ltd., announced today that new retail sales topped 7,500 units for the 2004 calendar year.

Triumph retailed 7,533 motorcycles in 2004, an increase of 35% over 2003, which makes Triumph the fastest growing production motorcycle company in America for 2004. In December, Triumph retailed 341 units, a 47% increase over the prior year, and the 10th record breaking month of 2004.

Triumph’s success in 2004 stemmed in part from interest generated by the introduction of 2 distinctive new models; the Thruxton 900 café-racer inspired variant of the venerable Bonneville, and the awe-inspiring Rocket III 2,300cc Power Cruiser. These exciting new bikes reintroduced thousands of consumers to the Triumph brand, which led to sales increases across the model line.

Triumph looks forward to another record-breaking year in 2005. This will be the first full-season for the Rocket III, and all-new versions the innovative Speed Triple Street Fighter and Sprint ST sport tourer featuring Triumph’s new 1050cc three cylinder engine will arrive in dealer’s showrooms in March.

Triumph Motorcycles (America) Ltd., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Triumph Motorcycles, Ltd, a manufacturer of Triumph motorcycles and accessories. Triumph Motorcycles (America) Ltd., is located in Newnan, GA and services the Triumph dealer organization throughout the United States, Canada and Latin America.

2002-2004 APRILIA Tuono 1000

Monday, January 24th, 2005

List Price: £7625
Insurance Group: 15

Essentially an RSV Mille sans fairing, the Tuono is more aggressively styled and mannered than the Aprilia Falco. Not for the faint-hearted thanks to a bolt upright riding position and high-rise bars which combine with 120bhp to produce a wheelie-tastic, low-geared beast.

It has all the Mille running gear, including the beautifully-suspended Showa forks.

There’s also a racing version, the Tuono R, which has performance chip, race exhaust and body kit.
MCN’s Keith Farr says: “You need the throttle control of a GP god to control the Tuono in the lower gears because the engine’s so responsive and powerful”

Triumph swerves into red route

Friday, January 21st, 2005

By Christopher Hope, Business Correspondent, Daily Telegraph.

Bold plans by Triumph, the British motorcycle maker once favoured by Steve McQueen and Marlon Brando, to double sales by the end of 2008 have crashed after it skidded into the red last year.

Latest accounts for Triumph Motorcycles show the private company drove into a £665,000 pre-tax loss, against a profit of £4.1m last time, for the year to June 30 2004. Turnover rose 13pc at £115m.

The 2004 performance did not include the previous year’s £2.1m profit from an asset sale after a fire at its plant in 2002. A £1.1m operating profit in 2004 was eliminated by a £1.8m interest bill. Employees were cut by 12pc to 510 staff.

In December 2003 Triumph forecast that sales and production would increase by 25pc a year for the next five years. The company said: “Triumph has now fully reinstated its manufacturing facilities following the fire in March 2002. During the year three new models were introduced, all of which were well received.”

None of Triumph’s three directors, including owner John Bloor, who rescued it in 1983, drew a salary last year.

TRIUMPH ARE LOSING MONEY

Friday, January 21st, 2005

Latest accounts for Triumph Motorcycles show the privately owned UK motorcycle manufacturer posted a £665,000 pre-tax loss, against a profit of £4.1m last time, for the year ending June 30 2004. But on the good news front, turnover rose 13pc at £115m.

The 2004 performance did not include the previous year’s £2.1m profit from an asset sale after a fire at its Hinckley plant in 2002. A £1.1m operating profit in 2004 was eliminated by a £1.8m interest bill. Employee levels were cut back by 12pc to 510 staff.

In December 2003 Triumph forecast that sales and production would increase by 25pc a year for the next five years - which seemed a touch optimistic for a niche market motorcycle maker, with no off-road bikes, ATVs, mopeds, scooters, mini-motos, or other high volume models within its range.

The company must naturally have high hopes for its Rocket III cruiser model, especially in the crucial North American market. But the recent near collapse of the US dollar against sterling surely means that another year of belt-tightening lies ahead for Triumph, even if the new Sprint ST spanks the VFR800 in a few key EU markets.

The bottom line for Triumph is that they have struggled to produce a serious rival to 600-1000cc Japanese sportbikes since their revival in the late 1980s. Triumph have no V-Twin cruiser model, no MX machine, no lightweight entry level/novice bike, in their range either. It also took the company too long to revive the Bonneville twin for the retro conscious US market.

A cold, hard look at the reality of the world bike market, the rising costs in manufacturing/bike distribution, the pension costs for staff, EU regulations, the strength of sterling etc adds up to a struggle for survival in the longer term.

The first twelve months of trading meant twelve-hour days and seven-day weeks with little in return and it became apparent that a change of direction was needed. An opportunity to obtain retail premises came in August 1981 and a move was made into retailing.
